Episode 12: Downfall. The last episode of Amber’s new cut of its 1980s interviews with T Dan Smith and fellow Newcastle left wing councillors from the 1950s and 1960s. The charismatic Smith was jailed in 1974 for corruption and the 12 episodes of Mouth of the Tyne, following the story from his childhood to his imprisonment can now all be seen here. We will keep all the episodes up on SideTV until the end of October, after which we plan to release the work on DVD. The interviews from which Mouth of the Tyne has been constructed were part of the research for the experimental documentary thriller T Dan Smith (Amber Films, 1987, 85 mins) which is now available on DVD. The work with T Dan Smith grew, in part, out of Amber’s engagement with the redevelopment of Newcastle with which he is centrally associated – the 1979 film QUAYSIDE (SideTV Channel 3) and the 1983 film BYKER (SideTV Channel 1). Amber’s new documentary TODAY I’M WITH YOU, which has grown out of Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen’s recent Byker Revisited work, is broadcast on BBC4 (Sun 12 Sept, 8pm and on BBC i-player during in the following week) as part of its Newcastle night.
